Before You Start

Lights Out mounts inside your window recess using a compression frame. Accurate measurements make sure the frame fits snug and seals out every bit of light.

What You'll Need

📏 Metal Tape Measure
✏️ Pen & Paper
🕑 5 minutes
Step 1

Measure Your Window Depth

The compression frame needs at least 1.2 inches (3 cm) of clear depth inside the recess to mount securely.

  1. Start your tape measure at the front edge of the window recess (the part closest to you).
  2. Extend the tape straight towards the window.
  3. Write down the distance to the glass or any obstructions that stick out (handles, latches, winders).
  4. If that number is 1.2" (3 cm) or more, you're good to go.
Watch For Obstructions
Handles, lock mechanisms, trickle vents, and window winders all eat into your usable depth. Measure to the nearest obstruction, not to the glass.
Close Call?
If you're between 1" and 1.2", send us a photo of the window recess. We might still be able to make it work. Email support@lightsout.com.
Depth Measure from the front edge inward to the shallowest obstruction.

Step 2

Measure the Width

Windows aren't always perfectly square. Three measurements catch any variation so nothing gaps.

  1. At the top of the recess, measure from left wall to right wall.
  2. At the middle, measure left to right again.
  3. At the bottom, one more time.
  4. Write down all three. Give us the smallest number.
Why the Smallest?
If the recess narrows at any point, the frame won't fit past it. The smallest measurement guarantees a clean fit everywhere.
Don't Deduct Anything
Give us the exact measurement. We make the necessary deductions when we cut your blind.
Top Middle Bottom Measure width at three heights.
Record the smallest.

Step 3

Measure the Height

Same logic. Three spots, smallest number wins.

  1. On the left side of the recess measure from the top wall down to the sill.
  2. In the center top to sill.
  3. On the right side top to sill.
  4. Write down all three. Give us the smallest number.
Measuring to the Sill
Measure to the top surface of the sill where the blind will rest.
Left Center Right Measure height at three positions.
Record the smallest.

Easy Mistakes to Avoid

Small errors lead to light leaks. Here's how to get the best fit.

📐
✗ Steel tape
✓ Straight & level

Tilting the tape even slightly inflates the number. Keep it flat and parallel to the surface.

🔀
✗ Bent tape
✓ Flat against the wall

A tape measure that bends or curves gives a shorter reading. Press it gently against the recess wall.

🔢
✗ Rounding up
✓ Nearest 1/16"

Round to the nearest sixteenth of an inch. When in doubt go with the slightly smaller number.

Common Questions

What if my window recess isn't perfectly square?
That's normal — most windows aren't. That's exactly why we ask for three measurements in each direction. The smallest number ensures the frame fits everywhere without forcing or gapping.
Should I use a metal or fabric tape measure?
Metal. Fabric tape measures stretch and sag, which can throw off your numbers by enough to matter. A basic metal tape measure from any hardware store works perfectly.
My depth is under 1.2" — am I out of luck?
Not necessarily. If you're close (1" or more), send us a photo showing the obstruction — sometimes it's a removable handle or an adjustable vent. We can work with you to figure out options.
Do I need to account for handles or locks in my width/height?
Handles and locks only affect the depth measurement (Step 1). For width and height, measure the full recess opening wall-to-wall and top-to-sill — ignore any hardware that protrudes inward.
What if I mess up the measurements?
We've got you. If your blind doesn't fit because of a measurement error, we'll remake it free of charge. No fine print, no arguments. That said, double-checking takes 30 seconds and saves you a few days of waiting.
I have multiple windows — do I need to measure each one?
Yes. Even windows that look identical can vary by a quarter inch or more. Measure each one individually for the best fit.
